INTI’s Aspiring Chefs Combine Impressive Culinary and Business Skills in Showcase for Hospitality Education

October 12, 2012

INTI College Sarawak’s culinary arts students whipped up an array of mouth-watering cuisine in a display of talent and creativity that delighted an appreciative audience at the institution recently.

Calling their effort “Lunch Attack”, the students, who are members of INTI’s Culinary Arts Club, set out to explore new frontiers of creativity as they honed their food preparation and business management skills. As part of the planning process, they had to decide on a menu of appetizer, main course, soup and dessert. The final outcome was a tantalizing selection of crab rangoon, minced prawn & mixed vegetables, sweet & sour fish fillet, black pepper chicken, sweet corn soup and cassava & sago pearls. The students also had to work out the relevant costs in organizing the event and ensure that wastage would be kept to a minimum.

“The objective of the showcase was to nurture the spirit of creativity in our budding chefs and enable them to enhance their event management and other skills. The audience made up of INTI’s staff, students and visitors truly enjoyed the gastronomic delights that had been prepared using common ingredients and appreciated the effort put into the event to make it a success,” said Ivy Lau, Chief Executive and Principal of INTI College Sarawak.

INTI’s 2.5-year Diploma in Culinary Arts programme helps students develop both culinary and business skills for a career in fine-dining and other food service operations. They also gain real-world experience by interning at local and internationally established hotels and restaurants. INTI’s close links with industry partners such as the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), Hilton Kuching, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Grand Dorsett Labuan, Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur, Impiana Hotel KLCC and many others enable students to experience internship with these fine establishments and give them a head start in the food and beverages line. By having relevant hands on experience, they are able to develop new skills and aptitudes that cannot be acquired in a classroom.

Graduates with an INTI Diploma in Culinary Arts have access to exciting and rewarding career opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry as professional chefs, catering managers, restaurateurs, food consultants and in many other managerial and operational positions in the hotel and food & beverages lines.

Students of INTI benefit not only from the institution’s over 25 years of experience and strong track record, but also gain from the global synergy and resources that Laureate International Universities provides. INTI is part of Laureate, which has a presence in 29 countries, with more than 60 accredited campus-based and online universities and 130 campuses, serving over 740,000 students globally.
