INTI Goes “On Air” to Unveil Career Opportunities in Mass Communication

April 4, 2013

“Their beaming faces said it all,” recounted Roberto Calleja, Head of INTI’s Mass Communication programme, when asked about the feedback from Foon Yew High School students on an educational visit to INTI International University. “They were elated with what they learnt from the workshop on the basics of radio production and even expressed their interest in pursuing careers in mass communication.”

The visiting students had a fascinating hands-on learning experience at INTI’s Media Centre under the guidance of Calleja (in foreground).

More than 20 students had visited INTI’s Media Centre, which houses a chic classroom, a Macintosh-powered editing room and a modern recording studio that thrilled the young visitors. The visit covered learning the three processes of radio production and the preparations required before going ‘on air’. The students were divided into small groups and were given a short topic to discuss during the recording. Some became radio anchors while others were equally excited to use the editing software.

“The visit was a good platform to showcase the variety of career opportunities to the students. They were briefed on possible careers in advertising, broadcasting, journalism and public relations, and they were amazed at the vast career pathways in the media industry,” said Calleja.

The visitors were also introduced to INTI’s Mass Communication Club members who shared their experiences at INTI. “Mass communication at INTI is fun. We get to use the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that we have on campus. The lessons are relevant to the current industry practice, the lecturers are experienced in their fields, and the projects provide us with a more hands-on approach to this course,” shared Eva Khoo, a Year 2 Mass Communication student and president of the Mass Communication Club.

Calleja concluded the campus visit with some motivational words for the students: “You have to be confident and comfortable in whatever field you would want to pursue in future – be it in advertising, broadcasting, journalism or public relations. Wouldn’t it be nice to do something that you are passionate about? Then you will learn and grow more, and you will never get tired of pursuing excellence in your career.”
