Before enrolling into a Pre-University programme, it is important to first know what Pre-University (Pre-U) education is. Basically, it is an education pathway that helps you to transition or pair with an undergraduate degree programme after graduating from a Pre-U course. Basic Guide to Pre-University Programmes in Malaysia
1. A-Level Programmes
Taking Advanced Level or “A-Levels” in Malaysia is generally convenient as the majority of private universities and colleges in the country offer A-Level programmes. They are Pre-University courses that are based on the UK education system and is equivalent to the Form 6 accreditation in the UK. A-Levels are the most widely recognised form of Pre-University qualification worldwide. Most students who opt for A-Levels intend to continue their undergraduate studies in competitive courses like Law, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy abroad. However, A-Levels cost more compared to other Pre-U programmes. The duration ranges from 15 to 24 months in Malaysia.
2. Matriculation Programmes
The Malaysian Matriculation Programme is a Pre-U programme offered by government schools. It is allocated for local students, specifically 90% of Bumiputera students and 10% of non-Bumiputeras1. In this programme, students are given the option to choose subjects in Science, Accounting or Technical. Matriculation is highly sought after due to its incredible affordability and its academic recognition and acceptance by foreign tertiary institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and more. The duration of the programme takes one to two years to complete.
3. Diploma Programmes
Diplomas are unique in the sense that the syllabus includes internships or practical training as part of the component of the programme. The entry requirements make it suitable for SPM leavers who did not perform well in their SPM. Basic requirements to enrol are at least 3 to 5 credits and a pass in Bahasa Melayu, History and English. Furthermore, a Diploma qualification may be used to skip the first year of an undergraduate degree, depending on the course. The duration of the programme is between two to three years.
4. Foundation Studies
Foundation programmes are for students who want to further their university studies either locally or abroad. Unlike Diploma courses, Foundation courses in Malaysia typically take only one year to complete before enrolling in an undergraduate degree programme. It is, however, a lower accreditation compared to Diplomas. This means that individuals who stop at Foundation studies may experience difficulty in getting hired compared to Diploma graduates who have hands-on training and work experience during their study. Therefore, it is recommended to continue with undergraduate degree studies to increase chances of employability.
