A Growing Era of the Fashion Industry

December 29, 2020

“There was a time when education in fashion was limited and career choices were restricted to design or fashion houses where you either design clothes, spaces or lifestyle. We have come a long way since then and courses like Fashion Management & Communication prove the versatility and growth of fashion in our country,” stated Dr Jane, Chief Executive of INTI International College Subang (INTI) about the latest programme offered at INTI’s Center of Art & Design.

INTI’s Center of Art & Design students were given an opportunity to be part of the ‘Save The Malayan Tiger’ exhibition held at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Similar to this, the Fashion Management & Communication students will work on real live projects with fashion and lifestyle brands and agencies.

Fashion Management & Communication, a newly launched 3+0 degree programme in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, is a course that promotes creative thinking, critical interpretation and analysis.

Dr Jane further added, “It is a very broad spectrum of skill sets given to an individual eager to work on his or her effective communication when dealing with anything related to fashion and art. Since the degree is versatile, the scope and opportunities are equally interesting such as managing fashion brands and events.”

What is a Fashion Management & Communication curriculum like?

“The programme introduces a broad range of issues related to the fundamentals of fashion management and communication, fashion products and visual communication. Students will get to explore innovative ways of approaching fashion management, marketing and communication problems and develop strategic and creative capabilities in different ways,” shared Ang Tong Yin, Dean of INTI’s Center of Art & Design.

She also explained that the curriculum spread across three years of the programme includes areas such as business of fashion, fashion photography, fashion communication and emerging media, and visual merchandising.

Careers in Fashion Management & Communication

A career in finance, business and Information Technology (IT) was considered top-notch until recent times. But with the new trends in the market, fashion is no longer lagging when it comes to career choices.

Looking at the growing demand of customer-centric, value and design-oriented products and services, there had to be new job segments that focus on people who specialize in understanding, interpreting and studying user requirements and can communicate actively within teams.

This programme gives an insight into a multi-disciplinary role, where one will understand how the whole creative team works and what is expected from the end product and service. “A few of the many careers available to students once they graduate from this programme are journalism, brand strategists, media influencers, fashion photographers, visual merchandisers, product development and events management,” said Tong Yin.

She also affirmed, “Fashion management and communication professionals grow up with a diverse mix of skill sets enabling them to run and head a fashion and lifestyle start-up without any difficulty.”
