There are diverse approaches to teaching and learning at INTI College Sabah, and perhaps the most exhilarating if not effective is through competition involving students, faculty and industry participation.
Working closely with players in the hospitality and tourism industry, INTI provides access to an excellent platform for students to gain exposure through the Sabah Hospitality Fiesta.
An annual event co-organized by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sabah/Labuan Chapter and the Asian Tourism International College to provide an avenue for hoteliers and students to exhibit their tourism and hospitality related talents and skills in competition, this year’s Sabah Hospitality Fiesta saw the participation of close to 200 contestants from education institutions, hotel associations and freestanding restaurants.
Represented by five students and an instructor, INTI participated in six categories: Bed-making, Table-setting, Fruit-carving, Signature Dish Preparation, Local Dish Preparation and Black Box Cooking. Led by Chef Zulkarnine Bohari, the team won gold, silver and bronze medals for Signature Dish Preparation, Fruit-carving and Table-setting respectively.
“It was great exposure for the students to participate in this competition which gave them the opportunity to prove their abilities and also market their potential to the industry,” said Dr Alan Lim, Principal of INTI College Sabah. “Competing against participants from other colleges and witnessing professionals from the hotel industry in action against one another provided them with important benchmarks for improvement.”
