Students Mobilise Community for Cancer Support

As cancer treatment costs rise and donations decline, students at INTI International College Penang have led the way in rallying support. On 19 July 2025, over 300 participants gathered on campus for the Wings of H.O.P.E. Cancer Fundraising Run, an event that raised funds for Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital’s underprivileged patients.

Organised by the INTI Pre-University Society and the Rotaract Club, the event included a 5KM charity run, wellness booths, and cancer awareness activities. Proceeds will support Mount Miriam’s Cancer Welfare Fund, which assists patients in managing the high costs of treatment and palliative care.

Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, INTI International College Penang Chief Executive Ms. Hemalatha Murugiah, and representatives from Flex and the Rotary Club of Penang flag off the Wings of H.O.P.E. Cancer Fundraising Run.

“Wings of H.O.P.E. reflects our commitment to nurturing socially conscious graduates who are ready to engage with the world,” said Hemalatha Murugiah, Chief Executive of INTI International College Penang. “Our students are not just learners, they’re changemakers.”

In 2024, Mount Miriam disbursed RM3.2 million in aid, almost twice its annual average, despite receiving only RM2.2 million in donations.

“We are seeing a rising need that we can no longer meet alone,” said Gemma Ong Saik Ching, Chief Operating Officer of Mount Miriam. “The compassion and leadership shown by INTI’s students today bring hope, not just to our patients but to our mission.”

The campaign, named after the values of Health, Outreach, Prevention, and Empowerment, was led by Cambridge A-Levels student and Pre-U Society President, Phang Chloe. She and her team spent seven months planning the event.
“We knew we wanted to leave a meaningful legacy beyond our classroom,” said Chloe. “It took seven months of planning, many doubts, and a steep learning curve, but what kept us going was our belief in the cause and our commitment to helping those in need.”

Officiated by Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, the event drew students, educators, healthcare professionals, NGOs, and families in a shared act of solidarity.

Support also came from the Rotary Club of Penang, which mentored the student organisers and provided funding.
“Community projects like this help students build leadership skills, grow their networks, and understand the value of empowerment,” said Chandra Segar, President of the Rotary Club of Penang. “We were incredibly impressed with the flawless execution and are committed to working with INTI on future social impact efforts.”

For Chloe, the event represented more than just fundraising; it was about demonstrating that anyone can initiate action.
“Compassion doesn’t require age or status, just intention,” she said. “I hope this event shows young people everywhere that they can lead change, no matter how small it starts.”

“We’re proud of what our students have accomplished, and even prouder of the hearts they’ve touched along the way,” Hemalatha added.

The public can continue supporting Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital through donations, upcoming events, or by organising their own campaigns. More information is available on the hospital’s official Facebook page.
