A team from INTI International University’s Registry Office, led by Intan Hazila Zulkurnain, Registrar, participated in a University Social Responsibility (USR) event at Zoo Melaka on 7 September 2024. The event gathered 25 participants and aimed to raise environmental awareness, support wildlife conservation, and foster community engagement through hands-on activities.
25 participants from INTI International University’s Registry Office volunteered at Zoo Melaka as part of the University Social Responsibility (USR).
The day’s activities were diverse and aligned perfectly with INTI’s USR objectives of empowering staff, increasing conservation awareness, and supporting community-driven initiatives. Participants were divided into small teams and assigned tasks such as cleaning animal enclosures, preparing food for the animals, and learning about the daily routines of zoo staff.
For Nur Adiera Azhan, an active participant of the Registry Office, the event was more than just a break from the office. It was a chance to reconnect with nature and contribute to conservation efforts. “Working closely with the animals and zoo staff allowed us to support the preservation of endangered species directly,” she explained. “Zoo Melaka was the perfect venue, providing a hands-on experience that brought home the importance of wildlife conservation.”
One of the most exciting parts of the day was preparing and feeding the animals, a task typically reserved for the zoo staff. Participants learned how to measure food portions according to each animal’s specific dietary needs. “For many, this was a new and eye-opening experience,” Adiera said. “They not only learned the practical side of animal care, but they also gained a deeper understanding of the dedication required to run a place like this.”

Qistina Tarmizi, also from the Registry Office, shared her memorable experience with the animals. “Feeding the bear and tiger was thrilling, though a little nerve-wracking,” she said with a smile. “I even had the chance to give Elsa, the white tiger, a gentle bath. It’s not every day you can say you’ve helped care for such majestic creatures! But it wasn’t just fun moments—cleaning five cages on my own was no joke. It made me appreciate how much effort goes into maintaining this place.”
Say cheese! A participant is posing with an ostrich while cleaning its sanctuary.
But the day wasn’t just about caring for animals; it also brought the team closer. Working side by side on various tasks, the participants strengthened their teamwork and built stronger bonds. “Doing USR at the zoo sounds fun but challenging,” Qistina admitted. “The tough parts made it even more rewarding and united us as a team.”
Reflecting on the day’s success, Adiera emphasised the value of the experience. “This event ticked all the boxes for our USR goals,” she said. “It blended education, teamwork, and community service in a way that left a lasting impression. We hope the knowledge and awareness gained inspires our staff to continue supporting conservation efforts in their own lives.”
The experience at Zoo Melaka offered much more than just a day out—it was a chance for INTI staff to build stronger connections and come away with a greater understanding of conservation work. It deepened their appreciation for wildlife and the importance of working together to protect it.
