Months of practice under the expert guidance of INTI’s food and beverage instructors have given Joel Poon Jian Yao a distinct edge to triumph in the 2012 national Monin Cup Cocktail competition and a shot at the Asian Regionals champion title.
Along with INTI’s four other finalists in the cocktail and mocktail categories, Poon had worked on his skills with passion and determination to live up to his coaches’ and supporters’ high expectations. His “Cocktail Monin Bacon Martini” which he described as a unique blend of “bourbon infused bacon, Monin maple spice syrup, triple sec and egg white served with Monin Watermelon Yuzu shot” impressed the judges with its appearance, taste and fragrance.

The Monin Cup is a competition for students in the hospitality and tourism field to display their abilities in areas such as mocktail and cocktail making, and flair tending. Poon was among 25 finalists from four educational institutions competing. With the win, he is set to represent Malaysia at the Monin Cup Asian Regionals in September 2012 in Kuala Lumpur where he will face the leading flair tenders from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and other countries.
“I am indebted to my coaches, in particular Mr. Gobein Selva, F&B coordinator at INTI International College Subang, for their tireless encouragement and support, which have helped me through three months of hard training and all the way to victory,” said Poon, a Diploma in Hotel Management (DHM) student at the College.
The DHM programme is affiliated with Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS), the number 1 hospitality management school in Asia Pacific and Australia*. The two-and-a-half year course provides a global study perspective and hands-on training opportunities for students as they are guided by some of the world’s leading experts in hospitality.
In the first year of the DHM course, students are exposed to the operational aspects of hotel management in areas such as kitchen management, culinary skills, F&B management and commercial cooking. In Year 2, students are groomed to develop managerial and leadership skills and to become independent. They will also undergo internship which gives experience in real-life work environments.
“The programme will help students develop knowledge and skills to operate and manage all departments – front desk, kitchen, F&B and so on – which is important towards the grooming of a General Manager in any establishment; including but not limited to hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars and events management companies,” explained Dr Dominic Szambowski, INTI International College Subang’s Acting President and Executive Dean, School of Hospitality, Tourism & Management.
Through ‘Problem-based’ and ‘Project-based’ learning approaches, DHM students develop problem-solving, analytical, leadership and teamwork abilities. Field trips to food and hospitality service establishments and participation in seminars and workshops are part of the holistic learning experience.
Graduates of the course can use their education and training to establish their own businesses ranging from restaurants and bars to hotel consultancy and recruitment companies. They also have the opportunity to pursue degree studies at BMIHMS in Australia. Students may enroll for an accelerated 15-month international hotel and resort management program which includes internship in Australia or other countries.
