Nurturing Business-ready Tech Graduates

December 17, 2020

When asked about the relevance of INTI International College Subang’s (INTI) new 3+0 Bachelors of Business Information Systems (BIS) programme; Vincent Loh, Dean of INTI’s Centre for Australian Degree Programmes, shared that the programme, offered in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology (SUT), Australia, addresses the dire need for business-ready tech graduates wanted by tech employers today.

Vincent Loh currently heads the Centre for Australian Degree Programmes at INTI International College Subang

He explained that after having numerous conversations with tech industry leaders, he found that a significant amount of time is spent on retraining graduates entering the workforce, simply because they lack an awareness of the fundamentals in business.

“We learnt that it is not because graduates do not have the technical skillsets and knowledge needed to thrive in their positions; they just lack an understanding of business functions, processes, and systems,” clarified the educator, who has had a long track record of engaging with industry professionals throughout his time at INTI.

Vincent further explained that this scenario also causes employers to question the quality of graduates, which – although often unintended – simultaneously demotivates these hopeful younglings who are eagerly seeking to build a career for themselves.

“Neither are helpful and are both counter-productive to graduates and hiring companies,” remarked Vincent.

He added, “Employers cannot hold graduates entirely accountable too, because every organisation’s makeup is different. Many companies today hardly have the time or resources to adequately support and guide their new employees, making it difficult for anyone to quickly adapt to the establishments they work in, let alone for fresh graduates who are just discovering the expectations of the workplace,” he said.

Drawing on these issues, Vincent explained that gaining early experience is key, in order for graduates to succeed in the workplace.

Tan Lin Nah shares that INTI’s new 3+0 Bachelor of Business Information Systems programme will provide students tremendous opportunities to gain industry experience even before they graduate

“With INTI and Swinburne’s heavy emphasis on industry-ready curriculum, students will not only be equipped with the technical know-hows provided in their selected major, they will also gain a comprehensive understanding of businesses, along with its functions,” shared Vincent.

Adding to Vincent’s comment, Tan Lin Nah, Chief Executive Officer of INTI International University & Colleges, said that students from Swinburne’s programmes offered at INTI will also be able to access, learn and work with over 450 industry partners ranging from MNCs to SMEs and entrepreneurs.

She said, “This access, along with our year long series of activities targeted at students’ career preparation and development, will grant our students tremendous opportunities in gaining as much industry experience as they need from a wide array of businesses, and acquire an in depth understanding of the different business structures available before they even graduate.”

An added feature of Swinburne’s business programmes that greatly benefits INTI students is its accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, or AACSB.

“Less than 5% of 16,000 schools worldwide are AACSB-accredited and Swinburne shares the honour of the 5% who were awarded with this recognition,” mentioned Vincent.

He shared that this accreditation guarantees the highest quality faculty, delivers relevant and challenging curriculum, and facilitates the development of highly skilled and more desirable graduates for employers, making Swinburne’s business-tech graduates world-class and highly employable anywhere around the globe.
