January 9, 2025

Jayshawn James, a business degree student at INTI International College Subang’s Centre of American Education, proudly represented Malaysia at the 2024 International Powerlifting Federation Asian Classic Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Competing in the under 66kg category, Jayshawn delivered a remarkable performance, securing fourth place overall and a silver medal in the deadlift discipline.

Jayshawn James showcases his prowess in the deadlift discipline, boasting an impressive personal best of 285kg.

Reflecting on the championship, he said, “It’s huge; we have competitors across Asia in every category. The Japanese powerlifter who won gold in my category (under 66kg) even broke the world record during the tournament.” Competing on such a significant platform, Jayshawn described the experience as unforgettable despite Uzbekistan’s winter weather challenges. Representing his country was a moment of immense pride.

This wasn’t Jayshawn’s first success in the international arena. “The previous competition where I represented my country and won was the Southeast Asia Cup back in 2022, where I competed as a junior,” he explained. At that event, he achieved first place in his category, highlighting his talent early in his career.

A full-time degree student, Jayshawn successfully balances his academic commitments with his passion for powerlifting. He also works at a local gym, providing personal training services. “It’s all about time management,” he said, crediting his ability to juggle training, work, and studies as key to his success.

His athletic journey began in football, a sport he excelled in during school. “I was offered a contract with a state team in Malaysia when I was 16, but I chose not to commit to football,” he shared. This decision allowed him to explore gym training, which ultimately became the foundation for his powerlifting career.

Despite powerlifting’s limited recognition in Malaysia, Jayshawn is determined to elevate its profile. He plans to move up to the under 74kg category next year to compete against stronger opponents and aims to qualify for the next national competition in May. When asked about his long-term aspirations, Jayshawn replied, “For a very long time,” powerlifters often reach their peak in their mid-30s”, giving him many years to achieve his goals

Jayshawn’s dedication to powerlifting and his commitment to representing Malaysia reflects his drive to excel both personally and professionally. With plenty of potential still ahead, he continues to strive for new milestones in the sport.
