October 9, 2024

The International Conference on Innovation and Technopreneurship (ICIT) 2024, hosted by the Faculty of Data Science & Information Technology at INTI International University, concluded recently, bringing together global experts to explore the role of innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the theme “Adopting Innovation and Transformation to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals,” the event served as a platform to exchange knowledge and inspire action towards global sustainability.

Held on 26-27 September 2024, the conference examined how technological advances and industry transformations can help tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues, such as climate change and educational inequality. Discussions emphasised innovation’s significant impact on reshaping industries to embrace sustainable practices.

In her opening remarks, Conference Chair Professor Ir. Dr. Malathy Batumalay highlighted the relevance of the conference’s theme. “By transforming industries and adopting sustainable practices, we can make meaningful progress toward the SDGs,” she said. She added that INTI is working towards becoming a research university and that the top papers presented at the conference would be selected for publication in a SCOPUS-indexed journal.

A major focus was the integration of green technologies and sustainable practices across various sectors. As countries and corporations face increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprints, experts at ICIT 2024 shared the latest developments in renewable energy, waste management, and eco-friendly innovations. These solutions aim not only to mitigate environmental harm but also to provide long-term economic and social benefits.

Following Professor Ir. Dr. Malathy’s address, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation, Professor Wong Ling Shing, expressed his excitement for the event. Reflecting on the progress since the first conference seven years ago, he remarked, “We have collaborators from all around the world.” He added, “Sustainability is no longer optional; it’s an imperative. This event is an opportunity to highlight our technological advancements, innovation, entrepreneurship, and how we can contribute to a better future.”

Another key topic was the digital transformation of education, which plays a crucial role in the SDGs. Speakers discussed how digital tools and artificial intelligence reshape education systems worldwide, making learning more accessible and inclusive. The importance of closing education gaps to ensure underserved communities can benefit from these advancements was a recurring theme.

The conference also fostered international collaboration by bringing together academic institutions, industry leaders, and policymakers to share insights. Contributors included the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT), the Institute of Engineering & Technology, AMET University and Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies, who provided valuable perspectives and expertise.

Collaboration was central throughout the event, emphasising that achieving the SDGs requires joint efforts across sectors and borders. The Best Collaborators Award recognised institutions like AMET University, which submitted 32 full papers, and Dayananda Sagar Academy of Technology and Management, with 20 full papers, for their exceptional contributions.

ICIT 2024 aimed not only to present groundbreaking research but also to inspire partnerships that lead to real-world solutions. As technological innovations shape the future, the conference demonstrated INTI’s commitment to advancing education, research, and industry collaboration for a more sustainable world.
