Christine Lee Jia Yun delivered a strong performance at the 11th Sarawak International Dragon Boat Regatta 2025, securing the 1st Runner Up position in the International Premier Women 12s category with her teammates from the Pacific West Dragon Boat Club. Held from 24 to 26 October at the Kuching Waterfront, the regatta brought together top-tier athletes from around the world.

Christine, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (4+0) student under INTI International College Penang’s collaboration with Southern New Hampshire University, USA, competed as the team’s drummer—a role that required clear decision-making, pace coordination, and precise communication during the race.

“It was an honour to represent both my team and INTI at an international platform,” said Christine. “Although there were many challenges, our team stayed united and focused until the very end. Dragon boat racing has helped me develop discipline, teamwork, and the courage to step outside my comfort zone.”
Her interest in the sport began through her sister, whose enthusiasm and friendships formed in the dragon boat community encouraged her to join. Despite the Pacific West women’s team returning to competition after seventeen years and having members based in different parts of the world, the team demonstrated strong cohesion throughout the regatta.

Training for the event was demanding. “We trained intensely, often five to six days a week during racing season. Beyond team practices, I also committed to individual training, including jogging and gym workouts. As a drummer, having a clear and steady mind is essential, and I worked hard to fulfil my responsibilities,” Christine said.

Her achievement was commended by her lecturer, Veerathayalani Heimkumar, who described her as a student who consistently demonstrates focus and determination. “It is inspiring to see our students excel beyond the classroom. Christine has shown endurance, focus, and discipline, qualities that reflect the values we nurture at INTI.”

Hemalatha Murugiah, Chief Executive of INTI International College Penang, said: “Christine’s accomplishment represents the type of well-balanced success we aim to cultivate in all our students. Her achievement reinforces INTI’s mission to develop confident individuals who thrive in dynamic environments. We are extremely proud of her commitment, spirit, and the positive recognition she has brought to INTI.”

Looking ahead, Christine hopes more INTI students will consider sports as part of their development. “Sports can build confidence, resilience, and meaningful friendships. Even without prior experience, consistent effort and a willingness to learn can help anyone develop their abilities.”
