From Script to Screen: The AI Revolution in Filmmaking

July 22, 2025

INTI International College Subang’s Mini Film Festival 2025 was more than just a showcase of student talent—it became a dynamic, interactive venue where curiosity about the future of filmmaking took center stage. One of the festival’s standout events, “From Script to Screen: The AI Revolution in Filmmaking,” drew a crowd of nearly 150 enthusiastic students, all eager to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the creative landscape. Far from a standard industry talk, this session was designed as a lively, two-way dialogue—giving students the chance to challenge, reflect, and debate essential questions about their future in film.

Mohd Noor Alif, Deputy Director of the Copyright Division at MyIPO, and renowned local producer A. Samad Hassan shared their valuable experiences and behind-the-scenes insights into the local film industry with the students.

The event featured two prominent industry voices: Encik Mohd Noor Alif, Deputy Director of the Copyright Division at MYIPO, and Encik A. Samad Hassan, renowned producer of local hits such as Jebat, Daulat, and One Cent Thief. Together, they offered fresh perspectives on pivotal issues. Encik A. Samad Hassan encouraged participants to view AI as a creative partner rather than a replacement. While AI can streamline technical aspects and boost efficiency, he reminded students that human filmmakers bring emotional depth, cultural understanding, and storytelling intuition that technology can’t replicate. He stated, “A lot has changed due to AI, but we have learned to work and collaborate with AI to produce better outputs”.

Encik Mohd Noor Alif, meanwhile, demystified the world of intellectual property rights in the era of intelligent machines. He explained the essentials of copyright registration under the current Copyright Act 1987, emphasizing that while Malaysia’s legal framework is keeping pace with global shifts, ongoing vigilance is key to protecting young creators in an evolving digital age.

The session truly came alive during an energetic Q&A segment, where students led the discussion with probing questions about the ethics of AI-generated content, the future of creative jobs, and who holds the rights to works created with AI tools. Their thought-provoking queries underscored the urgent need for clear legal protections and ethical frameworks—empowering aspiring filmmakers not just to navigate change, but to shape it.

Reflecting on the session, Mr. Mohd Khairul Irwan, Head of Programme for the Diploma in Mass Communication and Diploma in Digital Media, stressed that events like these are crucial for equipping students with the creativity and legal savvy they’ll need to become pioneers in the next era of filmmaking. The occasion gained even greater significance with a visit from the CEO of FINAS, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Azmir Saifuddin bin Mutalib, who inspired students by highlighting the need to foster innovation in filmmaking while keeping human creativity at the heart of every story.

Above all, INTI’s Mini Film Festival 2025 demonstrated that the future of filmmaking is in capable hands. Students weren’t just learning—they were leading thought and dialogue, ready to harness the power of new technologies and redefine what’s possible on screen
