The Centre for University of Hertfordshire Programmes at INTI International College Subang, in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, UK, recently held the INTI-UH Symposium 2024 with the theme “Fostering Lifelong Learning for a Sustainable Future”. Conducted virtually on 11 and 12 September 2024 via Microsoft Teams, the two-day event attracted over 200 participants from academia, industry, and the student community, aiming to explore innovative approaches to embedding sustainability in education.
Over 200 participants engaged in the two-day symposium held via Microsoft Teams, showcasing a vibrant exchange of ideas and collaboration.
Dr Jane Lim, Chief Executive of INTI International College Subang (IICS), opened the symposium by highlighting the vital role of lifelong learning in advancing sustainability goals. “Our focus is on cultivating continuous learning that drives environmental awareness, inclusivity, and innovation,” she stated, setting the tone for the event’s thought-provoking discussions.
Throughout the symposium, participants examined various aspects of how education can evolve to meet sustainability demands. Topics included the role of digital tools in enhancing lifelong learning, the growing significance of micro-credentials in ensuring educational relevance, and how education can empower communities to build resilience in an ever-changing world. The discussions also delved into embedding sustainability into curricula to nurture future environmental stewards, the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on equitable access to education, and the integration of sustainability principles across programs to foster socially responsible global citizens.
A key point of the symposium was the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into education. Uma Muthusamy, a senior lecturer at IICS, emphasised the importance of hands-on learning. “We must move beyond traditional classroom instruction and engage students in real-world ESG challenges to better prepare them for the future,” she said.
Uma Muthusamy and Dr Wong Yee Chin, representatives from INTI, presented the institution’s ongoing sustainable projects and efforts in leading sustainable education.
The transformative power of technology in education, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, was also a central theme. Dr Rana Altounjy from Manipal GlobalNXT University discussed how the pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital learning platforms. “While COVID-19 wasn’t ideal, it did shift how we perceive education. We now see the potential for learning to extend beyond physical classrooms, leveraging digital tools to enhance sustainable education,” she explained.
To foster interaction, the symposium incorporated engaging activities such as sustainability quizzes and puzzles, led by Katarzyna Hanula-Bobbitt, former COO of Professors Without Borders and Co-Founder of Mindscape. These activities highlighted how virtual events can foster active participation and meaningful dialogue.
The INTI-UH Symposium 2024 reinforced the enduring partnership between INTI and the University of Hertfordshire while highlighting both institutions’ dedication to equipping students for the demands of a sustainability-driven future. The event offered participants valuable insights and skills by focusing on practical solutions and promoting lifelong learning. Over the two days, attendees engaged in eight hours of training, with certificates awarded upon completion.
