The Doctor of Education (DEd) Programme at INTI International University collaborated with the Muhibbah Food Bank Malaysia Society to provide postgraduate students with an experiential learning opportunity centred on sustainability, resource rescue, and community engagement. The initiative aimed to connect academic learning with real-world community service while fostering greater awareness of social responsibility and sustainable resource management.
A total of 28 postgraduate students participated in the programme, which involved sorting and labelling rescued clothing collected from closed boutiques. These items were prepared for future community distribution activities, including disaster relief efforts, charitable programmes, and seasonal free-market initiatives. Through this hands-on experience, students gained valuable insights into volunteer coordination, resource management, and the operational aspects of community-based support services.
The initiative contributes to reducing waste by extending the lifespan of usable items and redirecting them to individuals and families in need. The rescued clothing will benefit low-income households, disaster-affected communities, and other vulnerable groups who require essential support. By participating in the preparation process, students played a direct role in ensuring these resources could be distributed efficiently and effectively.
The programme also strengthened collaboration between higher education and community organisations, demonstrating how collective efforts can support sustainability goals while creating meaningful social impact. Through active participation, students developed a deeper understanding of community needs, responsible resource utilisation, and the importance of contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable society.
