AFSM Giving Beyond Medical Outreach Services Strengthens Community Health and Clinical Training

AFSM Giving Beyond Medical Outreach Services was conducted through a collaboration between the Academy for Silent Mentor and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of INTI International University. The programme focused on providing free health assessments and treatments to the Bukit Mertajam community, with the aim of promoting health awareness and supporting Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

The outreach service provided members of the public with access to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatments, including consultation and acupuncture. Approximately 50 patients received care, benefiting from holistic approaches aimed at improving overall health and quality of life.

In addition to community service, the programme functioned as a clinical learning platform for students. Under the supervision of two lecturers, Ms. Low Xin Yi and Mr. Liew Min Jie, students were involved in patient consultations, diagnostic observation, case analysis, clinical reporting, and acupuncture practice. This allowed students to directly apply knowledge gained from key TCM courses in a real-world setting.

The experience strengthened students’ practical skills in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient communication, while also improving their confidence in delivering TCM-based healthcare services. It further enhanced their understanding of holistic healthcare and its role in preventive health management.

The initiative successfully integrated community engagement with academic training, contributing to public well-being while enriching students’ professional development and experiential learning.
