AFSM Giving Beyond Medical Outreach Services brought together the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Department of INTI International University and the Academy for Silent Mentor to provide free health assessments and treatments for the Bukit Mertajam community. The initiative aimed to promote health and wellness while supporting Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
The programme offered community members access to Traditional Chinese Medicine services, including health consultations, acupuncture treatments, and wellness advice. Approximately 30 patients received treatment, benefiting from holistic healthcare approaches that support overall well-being and quality of life.
The outreach programme also provided valuable experiential learning opportunities for students. Under the supervision of a qualified TCM practitioner, students participated in patient consultations, observed diagnostic procedures, prepared clinical reports, and assisted in treatment sessions. These activities enabled them to apply knowledge gained from courses such as Diagnostic of Chinese Medicine, Prescription of Chinese Medicine, Fundamentals of Acupuncture, and Technique of Tuina in a real-world setting.
By engaging directly with patients, students strengthened their communication, clinical reasoning, and practical skills while gaining greater confidence in delivering healthcare services. The initiative also enhanced public awareness of Traditional Chinese Medicine and highlighted the importance of preventive and holistic healthcare practices.
The programme fostered meaningful community engagement, supported student development, and reinforced INTI International University’s commitment to health promotion, experiential learning, and social responsibility.
