Minister Of Transport Engages Student Leaders at Inter University Leadership Training (InVaLT) Workshop

INTI International University was honored to host the esteemed Minister of Transport, Yang Berhormat Anthony Loke Siew Fook at the opening ceremony of the InValt Inter University Leadership Training Workshop held on the 16th June 2023. This event brought together a diverse group of young student leaders from 25 private colleges and universities.

The attendees were in for a surprise when the Honorable Minister expressed his desire to engage in an open conversation with the students instead of delivering a traditional speech. He emphasized the importance of connecting with young people and student leaders, stating, “Engagement means not just you listening,  but you engaging with me through your questions, comments and feedback.”

The students eagerly seized this opportunity to interact with the Minister, raising a wide range of thought-provoking questions. One of the topics discussed was the concept of a pedestrian-friendly city. In response, YB Anthony Loke emphasized that pedestrian walkways and related infrastructure fell under the jurisdiction of local government authorities and he expressed full support for such pedestrian-friendly environments, highlighting the need for seamless journeys within the public transportation system.

Additionally, the students directed inquiries about public transport in Malaysia, addressing issues such as “dead zones” where people lacked access to buses in their areas of residence. Students also sought insights into the government’s vision for public transportation within the Klang Valley and Penang over the next five years. Strategies to combat traffic congestion were also discussed.

YB Anthony Loke encouraged student leaders to take up the initiative in resolving such challenges and urged them to identify dead zones, as well as raise awareness and exert pressure on the government to address such issues. By emphasizing the role of student leaders and the significance of their actions, he empowered them to contribute and help bring about positive changes within public transportation in the country.

Regarding his vision for public transportation within the Klang Valley and Penang, YB Anthony Loke explained that significant developments were already underway. He mentioned the recent announcement by the Prime Minister on May 6th, 2023, regarding a new LRT project planned in Penang. Furthermore, he stated that there are ongoing discussions with the state government and other stakeholders aimed at improving public transportation within these areas.

The Minister’s visit to INTI International University not only provided a platform for fruitful discourse but also showcased the government’s commitment in engaging with young leaders to address their concerns. By emphasizing the importance of student participation and taking proactive measures, YB Anthony Loke demonstrated his dedication in resolving the issues discussed and fostering a seamless and efficient public transportation system in Malaysia for the benefit of future generations.
