According to the United Nations Global Compact, supply-chain sustainability is “the impact a company’s supply chain can make in promoting human rights, fair labor practices, environmental progress, and anti-corruption policies.”

In conjunction with Malaysia Environment Week, INTI International University hosted an Environment Day at the Tan Yew Sing Multipurpose Hall on 19 October to raise awareness about protecting Malaysia’s ecosystem.

Students from Miss Klara Arokiyasamy’s General Studies class organized the occasion as part of their assignment in collaboration with Dr. Nurdiana’s and Mr. Sriganeshvarun’s classes.

They set up booths promoting environmentally friendly products such as clothes and bags using recycle or organic materials. There were also mini-games and fashion shows to spice things up.

The students invited Mr. Andrew Sebastian, President, Founder and CEO of Ecotourism and Conservation Society Malaysia (ECOMY), to give a talk regarding ecotourism.

ECOMY is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to promote and conserve the wellbeing of natural sites and its ecological services.

Mr. Sebastian explained that in ecotourism, tourists mainly look for nature attractiveness.

“Malaysia is blessed with lots of natural wildlife such as birds, animals, and plants. We also have unique, one-of-a-kind flora and fauna like the Borneo orangutan and Rafflesia flower,” he said.

“ECOMY organizes education trips for tourists to teach them about the environment.”

He added that “each of us has a duty, an obligation to protect nature” since Earth is our only home.

Mr. Andrew urged people to be more eco-friendly.

“Use public transport as often as possible, and always remember the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle),” he said. “Plant more trees to reduce our carbon footprint.”

Also present was Mr. Alan @ Muralidharan Raghavan Pillai, Continuous Improvement Specialist, and Chairperson of the Environment Committee at Halliburton, who suggested some tips to protect the environment.

“For example, switching to energy-saving light bulbs and using biodegradable materials such as wood,” he said.

He called on companies to implement supply-chain sustainability in their products to ensure an eco-friendly environment.

Around 137 people attended the event, including students and staff members.
