Nowadays, it is not enough for students to purely have theoretical skills which are taught in the classroom. They need practical firsthand experience to gain valuable knowledge which can help them in their careers.
Considering this, INTI International University’s Mass Communication Club organized a roundtable talk about the radio industry with MixFM’s Breakfast crew: Aisha, RD and Prem as part of INTI’s Mass Communication Week.
Topics included how to get started in the radio industry, the skills required to succeed in it, and how to get along well with your coworkers.
The speakers emphasized the importance of communication with your teammates as it is crucial in developing charisma between them. There needs to be a natural flow to the conversation.
A typical day for them begins at dawn. Before entering the studio, they must start pitching topics before the show.
“We are unscripted and spontaneous. Unless we get told to cover a specific issue, all three of us will decide and agree on a theme for the show,” said Prem.
In response to an audience question, Prem encouraged the audience to create their style to set them apart.
“When I first started, I used to imitate famous radio announcers such as Rick Dees. However, I was told to drop it and instead use a more natural voice that fits me better.”
They also talked about work-life balance and how to juggle their families and responsibilities.
As a mother, Aishah admitted that it is not easy to spend time with her family, take care of her kids, and host the show.
“However, I always find time for my loved ones even if I have to make sacrifices,” she said.
All in all, the presenters from MixFm managed to inspire the students who attended the event. The Mix FM Breakfast Show airs on weekdays from 6 – 10 a.m.
