Supporting Families, Inspiring Young Minds in Halgolla, Sri Lanka

The visit to Halgolla, Galaha, Kandy, Sri Lanka, extended the spirit of ICSE 2026 beyond the conference setting through a dedicated University Social Responsibility (USR) community engagement activity. The activity brought the team closer to the Tamil estate community, providing an opportunity to meet families, hear their experiences, and understand their aspirations and challenges, particularly in education and family well-being.

The engagement took place following the floods that affected parts of Kandy during the first week of August. As a gesture of support, approximately 10 families received essential household items and food supplies to help with their immediate needs during the recovery period.

The visit also focused on meaningful interaction with the younger members of the community. Children shared their learning experiences, aspirations, and personal journeys, creating an open exchange where the team could offer encouragement, knowledge, and inspiration.

By bringing community engagement alongside the academic exchange of ICSE 2026, the activity created a broader platform for connection and social responsibility. It strengthened relationships between the university and the local community while opening possibilities for future educational support, mentoring, and community-based initiatives in Halgolla.
