The “VR Meets Tamil” session was conducted as an innovative knowledge-sharing initiative to introduce Tamil school teachers from Mauritius and South Africa to the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in language and cultural education.
The workshop provided participants with an overview of VR technology, along with hands-on experience and practical guidance on integrating VR into Tamil language teaching. Through interactive demonstrations and collaborative activities, teachers explored how immersive tools can enhance classroom learning.
Using virtual field trips, 360° cultural experiences, and interactive environments, participants discovered new ways to engage students in learning Tamil vocabulary, literature, and cultural heritage. The approach supports more meaningful learning by combining visual, experiential, and language-based activities.
The session also helped teachers build digital skills and confidence in using technology for teaching. It highlighted how VR can improve student engagement, support language development, and strengthen cultural understanding.
Overall, the initiative demonstrated how technology can support the modernisation of mother-tongue education while preserving cultural identity, fostering stronger connections among global Tamil communities.
