Smart Wheelchair Integrating EEG with Obstacle Avoidance for Physically Impaired Individuals

Physical disability is a condition that affects a person’s physical capacity, mobility, stamina, or dexterity, Physical disabilities vary greatly from person to person. Numerous studies have found that powered wheelchairs, manual wheelchairs, and walkers are beneficial for providing mobility to all impaired people. Wheelchairs are available in a variety of types to accommodate the requirements of their users. Independent mobility expands a variety of educational possibilities, fosters feelings of self-reliance, and lessens dependence on others. Lack of exploration and control can frequently cause deprivation and a lack of motivation, which results in helplessness. Especially for elderly people, independent movement is a crucial aspect of self-esteem. Most of the physically challenged individuals are currently facing social isolation and many mental problems because of their reduced life opportunities due to their impaired mobility. While traditional manual or self-automated wheelchairs can often meet the needs of people with physical disabilities, certain members of the disabled community find it challenging or impossible to operate wheelchairs independently. EEG technology, with its ability to interpret cognitive signals, has been a focal point in developing intuitive and direct brain-machine interfaces. Therefore, integrating EEG technology into smart wheelchairs would provide a better and independent mobility for the user as all they require to do is to think to have the wheelchair to move. This proposed system is to inaugurate the emerging of IoT which emphasizes and has the capability to provide the expected outcome. In addition to that, by utilizing Arduino as the backbone or main component to build the presented system to address the potential issues mentioned above.

  • About 150 students benefited from this sharing session.
  • The awareness about SDGs in the direction of climate change is being transferred.
  • The impact is, more students will join our activities in INTI IU next year.
