Toward Age-Friendly Malaysia-care, capacity, and community

This workshop highlights the landscape of elderly care in Malaysia, emphasizing strong family-based caregiving rooted in filial piety, with nursing homes viewed mainly as a last resort. It discusses aging in place, the key role of live-in helpers (“kakak”), and the growing — though gradual — acceptance of elderly-care related professions such as nursing, physiotherapy, psychology, social work, and gerontology. The workshop also outlines enrollment trends, career prospects, government initiatives, national policy directions, and future workforce needs in response to Malaysia’s aging population.
