Exploring Genomics in Medicinal Plant Research

A workshop on Medicinal Plants and Omics provided a scientific introduction to the role of genomic approaches in medicinal plant research, using Solanum lasiocarpum as a case study. The session highlighted how genomics supports deeper species-level understanding, conservation efforts, and the systematic study of plants with medicinal value.

The presentation also touched on broader areas such as plant molecular systematics, evolutionary biology, and conservation-focused research. It demonstrated how modern omics approaches—including genomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics—can contribute to both fundamental research and practical applications in medicinal plant studies. Overall, the session emphasised the importance of genomics as a key tool in advancing the sustainable use and protection of medicinal plant resources.

Feedback from 62 participants reflected strong engagement and positive learning outcomes. Most respondents reported improved understanding of omics technologies and their relevance in medicine discovery. Participants also shared that the knowledge gained would be valuable for their future academic and research work.

In addition, many expressed interest in further opportunities such as study tours, exchange programmes, internships, and research attachments with INTI International University. The workshop was well received, demonstrating its effectiveness in strengthening scientific knowledge, inspiring research interest, and fostering academic collaboration.
