Paraphrasing Mastery Through Gamified Learning: A Treasure Trail Approach for Secondary Students
The Paraphrasing Treasure Trail Workshop was conducted during Language Enhancement Day (LED) 2025 with 50 Form 6 students from Kajang High School. The programme introduced an interactive, gamified approach to paraphrasing skills through the use of station-based tasks, QR codes, and collaborative learning. Students moved through themed “stations,” each offering simplified scaffolded activities involving synonym replacement, sentence restructuring, identifying main ideas, and avoiding plagiarism.
The workshop directly addressed students’ challenges with academic writing, summarising, and paraphrasing, skills essential for MUET, university readiness, and lifelong learning. It also integrates findings from the research paper From Readiness to Results, which highlights the importance of learner engagement, clear step-by-step training design, and confidence-building strategies. These elements were embedded through modelling, guided practice, and an immediate feedback loop using digital forms.
Lecturers and student helpers facilitated each station, providing linguistic support and real-time feedback. The workshop generated noticeable improvements in comprehension and accuracy, particularly for students who initially lacked confidence in English writing.
Overall, the programme strengthened literacy, motivation, and confidence while exposing learners to a modern, interactive pedagogical approach that is replicable in other school contexts.
